The Pioneer Society was established in 1874 to preserve the pioneer history of Cass County. Early memorabilia and artifacts were collected and displayed in the Cass County Courthouse. In 1923 Charles Harmon, the secretary of the Pioneer Society sent postcards and letters to the surviving pioneers throughout Cass County. He suggested they donate logs from their woodlot to build a log cabin. It was originally conceived as a temporary structure for the Pioneer Day picnic. The first log for the Cabin was a 52-foot beech from the Major Smith homestead.
Log hauling day was April 4th, 1923. The log donors assembled at the south end of town and paraded down Broadway to the log cabin site. The 146 logs were from every Township in Cass County. Cabin building day was May 23rd, 1923. The parade got under way from the Court House at 8:30. School children were given a holiday so that they could participate in the program and see the building of the log cabin. The local Military Band led the parade, down South Broadway to Stone Lake, the site for the log Cabin.
The Log Cabin was dedicated on Pioneer Day, June 20th, 1923. During the winter, members of the community donated "relics" to furnish the rooms in the cabin. The museum was opened on Pioneer Day, June 18, 1924.
